Exogenous Carbohydrate
Testing
How Can carb Testing Help Athletes?
Cutting-edge testing reveals your unique ability to digest and oxidise carbohydrates during exercise, allowing you to create a truly personalised fuelling strategy that maximises performance and minimises digestive issues.

Exogenous carbohydrate oxidation represents the metabolic utilization of orally-
consumed carbohydrates during exercise. The process encompasses:
1. Gastrointestinal transit and intestinal absorption via specific transporter proteins (SGLT1, GLUT5)
2. Hepatic metabolism and systemic circulation
3. Cellular uptake in working skeletal muscle
4. Oxidative phosphorylation and subsequent CO2 production
Current physiological models indicate that, ON AVERAGE, single-source carbohydrate transport(primarily glucose via SGLT1) demonstrates saturation kinetics at approximately 60g/hr, while dual-transport carbohydrate ingestion (glucose + fructose utilizing both SGLT1 and GLUT5) can elevate oxidation rates to approximately 90g/hr in group-level analyses.
However, significant inter individual variability exists in:
• Intestinal transporter expression and activity
• Gastrointestinal transit time
• Hepatic fructose metabolism capacity
• Muscle glucose uptake kinetics
• Thermodynamic efficiency
Our data demonstrates that individual variation in ExCHO can be as high as 50% from population means, underscoring the necessity for individualized assessment.

This test is most beneficial for individuals who are:
- Training and competing in events like half-marathons, marathons, ultramarathons, long-distance triathlons, and cycling events.
- Experiencing gastrointestinal issues during training or races (this is up to 80-90% of endurance athletes in certain races and competitions).
- Concerned about under-fuelling and hitting the wall during an event.
- Seeking to improve training quality. Optimal fuelling during training leads to better training quality, more consistent training and improved race-day performance.
Here's How We Do It...
- You will arrive on site, and the test will last around 2hr in total.

- You complete a controlled exercise session while wearing a metabolic mask and collecting breath samples.
- A test drink containing a glucose–fructose mix will be ingested over a 90min period (125ml per drink).
- The carbon from the drink shows up in the COâ‚‚ you breathe out — letting us track exactly how much of those carbs are being oxidized for energy.

-You will be weighed before and after the test and your sweat rate will also be calculated.

-You will receive your fully comprehensive results within 7-10day.
